CAMPBELL ROAD HOME

OHAUITI HOME

The home was designed upon a central axis to Mount Maunganui. This landmark is picture framed throughout the house. The central pavilion with high raking ceilings was to ‘reach out’ to the view. This was achieved by the large cantilevering roof structure. The interior Tongue & Groove ceiling linings were carried through to extenuate this cantilever.

The two adjoining wings containing separate living spaces, covered outdoor area with wood fireplace, Master bedroom, Guest rooms and Media room follow a simple gable roof structure equally proportioned to create a symmetry along the ridgeline.

With a natural palette from the interior to exterior, this has the feel of ‘home’ with warmth, functionality and independent yet flexible multi-use spaces.

IT'S ALL IN THE DETAIL

An old tennis court forms the site for the beachfront site. The main living areas and master bedroom backset family home. An extremely restrictive building envelope and site descending 4.0m from the existing driveway. A small site of under 500m2, with a 5.0m beachfront suite, are positioned on the upper level to achieve extensive views out to sea and down the coast. Interior spaces merge to large wrap around timber decks achieving a seamless flow to the exterior. Sliding interior shutters extend the space further from the dining to give connectivity to the void and entry foyer. Two bedrooms, rumpus and service areas are situated on the ground floor to create a very versatile space for extended family and friends to enjoy their stay.

The exterior palette enhances the building form and melds with the beach location. Cedar weatherboard and Cedar board and batten were used to create a detailed and relaxed aesthetic. This home was to create an architecture connected to the environment and capture the spirit of the traditional New Zealand Holiday Bach.

COUNTRY HOME

SEAMLESS PAVILLIONS

A LITTLE BIT OF HERITAGE

One of the last remaining large residential sections in a well-established suburb in Tauranga. The client, coming from a modernist architectural beachfront home requested a complete contrast. A New Zealand architectural classic - The distinct weatherboard Villa.'

We had to design the home with modern family living being essential. One of the main requirements of the brief was to create a degree of separation between adult and teenage spaces. However, these spaces had to be flexible and needed to function as one when required.

An intersecting the floor plan with a central living courtyard the home forms two wings. The courtyard, adjoining the main family living creates an axis extending to the pool. One of the reasons for this design was to shield the entertaining areas from prevailing winds but mainly to create privacy from the surrounding properties. It also functions to link the two wings as a large communal family space. View shafts through both wings allow for natural light and a close connectivity to other living zones and exterior landscapes.

Bricks reclaimed from a demolished hotel following the Christchurch earthquake wrap the two fireplaces, entry and landscape features. This, in conjunction with timber wall panelling, pressed tin ceiling panels and fastidious craftsmanship form a timeless architectural response but refined to meet today’s needs.

This home was commended in the Resene Architectural Design Awards 2017 within the new homes over 300SQM category,

With expansive views over Tauranga Harbour and positioned with Mount Maunganui as the main axis this country home sets the benchmark for rural living. A floated glass canopy roof leads you into the entry where you arrive at an 8.0m stud with exposed steel trusses through the main living area. Features of precast concrete and exposed steel beams direct to a more commercial approach. However, this is softened with Plywood ceilings and wall panelling. The introduction of local Kaimai stone also creates a timeless, crafted and permanence to the building. With 5 bedrooms, multi living areas, guest wing and expansive covered outdoor areas this home were never meant to be precious. It leads us back to tried and true design and materials which lend themselves completely to its surrounding environment and intended family living.

HOUSE ON THE HILL

SIMPLY TIMELESS

This home is a stunning collaboration between Jon and the client who had a very clear and consistent vision.  The result is a stunning home that is restful, stylish as well as incredibly practical. The home consists of a large open plan main living, dining and kitchen, featuring stunning exposed trusses and a customised concrete fireplace that was poured in-situ.    In addition, there is what is referred to as the 'den'.  The differing ceiling height gives this room a more 'snug' feeling. Maximising space, within the upstairs roof area is a child's playroom and a bedroom allowing guests their own space.

MODERN MOUNT

Simple clean lines give this Mount Maunganui beach house a strong architectural stance. Cedar wraps around the upper floor and soffits to create a strong textured contrast against plaster. Aluminium louvres and frames create interest and detail whilst controlling the sun during the day. With four bedrooms, study, two living areas and ample storage this beach house maximises the site but also provides generous outdoor spaces to create ever important flow between interior and exterior.
